Job Duties

  • The Department of Juvenile Justice is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth and strengthen families and communities across the Commonwealth.
  • DJJ's Division of Education is seeking a qualified English Teacher to provide high-quality, standards-based instruction that supports the individual learning needs of students and aligns with the Commonwealth's educational standards, statutes, and program certification requirements.
  • The teacher will design and deliver engaging, research-based instruction, foster a safe, respectful, and student-centered learning environment, and use student data to inform instruction, monitor progress, and promote academic success.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates must meet one of the following requirements: (1) Earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and graduated from an approved teacher preparation program in English; or (2) Earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and completed a major in English or a minimum of 36 semester hours of coursework distributed across the following areas: 12 semester hours in Literacy and Reading, including Survey of British Literature, Survey of American Literature, World Literature, and Literary Theory and Criticism; 3 semester hours in Language, including the development and nature of the English language; 12 semester hours in Composition, including grammar and writing, the teaching of writing, advanced composition emphasizing rhetorical practices, and teaching research skills; 3 semester hours in Oral Language, including public and presentation speaking, nonverbal communication, and communication in small group and mass communication; and six semester hours of electives from the listed English content areas.
  • Licensure: Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching Certificate/License with an endorsement in English.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience as an English Teacher in a secondary setting preferred; Experience teaching at-risk youth preferred.
