Internships
The New York City Independent Budget Office (IBO) invites applications from undergraduate and graduate students who are passionate about a future career in public policy. You will be working with our team of dynamic experts, whose expertise has shaped the city’s policy for over thirty years. You will learn the tools of public policy, apply these tools to real-life issues facing New York City, and meet and interact with key city policymakers.
Programs
We are currently recruiting interns for our Fall 2026 part-time internship cohort. Interns work a minimum of 10 hours per week, up to a maximum of 19 hours per week. The Fall internship runs for nine weeks, from October 19, 2026 through December 18, 2026. To be eligible, interns must commit to working a minimum of 8 weeks in this period.
Applicants should send a resume, writing sample and cover letter to IBOinterns@ibo.nyc.gov by October 2, 2026. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, commencing immediately. Our intern cohort will consist of undergraduate and graduate students working on the full range of exciting projects at IBO. Interns will also participate in training programs, networking events, and other professional development activities.
IBO is not considering applications for 2027 spring or summer internships at this time.
Qualifications & Requirements
Applicants should be enrolled as a student at an institution of higher education as of Fall 2026, or have recently graduated during Spring/Summer 2026.
Key skills include:
- Strong interest in public policy, with courses in fields including, but not limited to, economics, urban/city planning, political science, public policy, architecture, urban design, sociology, or real estate.
- Fluency with database and presentation tools; proficiency with tools such as SAS, Python or R, is a plus.
- Strong analytical, written and verbal communication skills.
Salary:
Between $18.00-$21.90 per hour, depending on education level and prior relevant experience.
Location:
IBO operates on a hybrid work schedule. Interns will generally be expected to come to IBO’s offices (Lower Manhattan, New York City) at least twice a week.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Internship duties will include: planning and conducting research and analysis, under the supervision of IBO staff, utilizing in-house and external data; providing support for the projects underway by IBO staff teams; and preparing presentation materials and reports for internal and external audiences.
